Although this Taiwan television mini-series only airs once a week and story is a bit slow, I’ve been patiently following it. Why? Because it’s interesting to see Vic Zhou’s acting improve and mature since “Meteor Garden” days. Patty Hou’s acting is sometimes good and at times, too unreal. But in general, she is tolerable. I personally don’t care much for the other characters of the story, as they are not as engaging to me. But finally the story is picking up in episode 11 with Patty finally leaving “Little Bear” restaurant to learn from another chef master.
I don’t quite understand why Asian netizens prefer “Romantic Princess”. I find the story and characters boring. Quite disappointing since I liked Wu Chun in “Hana Kimi”, and Angela Chang in “MVP Lover”. “Romantic Princess” is definitely not one of their best works.

If I were to rate this episode from 1 - 5 (5 being the highest), I’d say that this is a 2.5. It’s neither good nor bad. While the plot seem promising, the execution is unsatisfactory. The sequence of events seem to jump prematurely. The female lead’s (Bai Hui) father passes away without any explanation of why or how, the scene just automatically jumped. It seems like they’ve spent so much time showing viewers how kind he is, only to skip a huge part and jump to the scene after his death.
The scriptwriting can also use some improvement. While I understand that Bai Hui is supposed to be a woman who has lived a very sheltered life, saying she does not know that streets are divided by even and odd numbers are a bit too unrealistic.
In addition, Patty Hou looks too old to convince anyone that she’s a fresh graduate. It’s kind of confusing. It seems like she is supposed to be very young but when she wears office attire, she starts looking like her real age, deviating from her on screen character. Her character, Bai Hui, is also supposed to be elegant or delicate (especially whenever she talks about food), however there are scenes in this episodes where it is contradicting. Thus, inconsistent. She yells at Zhi Tian (played by Vic Zhou) when he calls her an idiot for running after them to pay them. I understand that she’s supposed to be fighting for principles here, but it’s just a bit overdone in this scene. Her screaming voice was getting annoying too.
Hopefully, the following episodes will be more promising than the first.
