I saw this video from Popseoul and couldn’t help but also post it here. Yup, he did it again. Despite funny jokes about his latest product, Koreans are now hooked to JYP’s “Tell Me” music and dance. Korean fans decided to add in their own creativity and choreograph their own version of this 80’s tune.

I read a blog post from Popseoul this week about a youtube video clip showing Jin Young Park’s (JYP) dancing in a small, white walled music studio that’s probably located in his New York office. Popseoul cracked on JYP’s and described the mega-producer as “dancing gorilla in shorts”.
I admit that the video is rather funny, but he’s also very entertaining to watch. He probably knows it too and how it will create some buzz online as it has.
That’s what you need to be in order to even get anywhere in the US entertainment industry. In fact, I think the Asian entertainment business desperately needs someone like JYP to help raise the bar and help crossing over to the US or Europe become a reality.
Vision
Having the eye for recognizing real talents and being a visionary who sees future opportunities which others don’t necessary see is highly crucial to success.
In many of his interviews, JYP was asked what made him believe that Rain (a.k.a. Bi in Asia) has potential to make it in the overseas. His answer was “desperation”. He saw the desperation in Rain’s eyes and knew a desperate person would go beyond his own limits to survive.
Getting His Hustle On
It’s hard enough for just anyone break into the music industry, it’s even harder for an Asian. Somehow, JYP is able to do that. He’s a natural hustler, and that helped carry him to where he is now. He’s also highly resourceful, and instinctively connects with the right people like P. Diddy, Outkast, 3LW, and others. “Ain’t no stoppin’ [him] now. [He’s] on the move.”
Putting His Money Where His Mouth
JYP believes in his vision, capabilities, his talents and he’s putting his money where his mouth is. He purchased a $4 million townhouse in New York and turned the place into a dorm/music studio to record songs and train his talents, complete with party space below. Like the Angry Asian Man says, “He’s like the Korean Berry Gordy, building his own Motown-like empire.”
There are other Asian artists, like Taiwan’s Coco Lee (who was billed as the “Asian Mariah Carey”) tried to crossover into the US market on a magic carpet but flopped in the end. There are plenty that are much more talented artists that never have a chance. But in order for more of them to have a chance to crossover, they would need more than just a pretty face and good voice. They’d need a someone like JYP who has the vision, connection and the drive to see it all through. Too bad Rain shot for the star and went super nova–but maybe there’s still hope for him since he’s working on “Speed Racer”.
